Male Menopause (Andropause)

Male menopause, or andropause, is the term used to describe the gradual decrease in production of testosterone that accompanies the male aging process. Starting at about the age of 30, male testosterone levels decrease by approximately 10% per decade. Not only do falling testosterone levels affect quality of life, but these low levels also place individuals at risk for age-related disease. Commonly seen effects of low testosterone include the following:

  • Decreased muscle mass accompanied by increased abdominal fat
  • Low sex drive and erectile dysfunction
  • Depression
  • Osteoporosis
  • Increased cardiovascular risk

At the Institute for Healthy Aging, we measure bio-available testosterone levels (not all testosterone is available for the body to use). Based on these levels, we prepare bio-identical testosterone cream specifically for each individual.
